Dumplings are a small ball of flour (about an inch in diameter) combined with a few other ingredients, such as fat, eggs and liquid. They are sometimes filled, and then cooked in liquid such as water, soup, stock or gravy, until done. A dumpling can also be sweetened dough wrapped around fruit, such as an apple, baked and served as a dessert. Some sweet dumplings are poached in a sweet sauce and served with cream.
